Prosecutors in Tangier have asked an investigating judge to open a formal investigation with the suspects in pretrial detention over alleged violations of voting procedures and election fraud, following the seizure of a bag containing ballot papers.
The Tangier Court of Appeal’s public prosecutor said in a statement that five suspects had been arrested in connection with the case. They include the heads and deputy heads of two polling stations, as well as another person.
Four of the suspects were brought before prosecutors on Saturday, while the fifth remains in police custody pending the completion of the investigation.
According to preliminary findings cited by the prosecutor, the person found carrying the bag was a deputy head of a polling station. Investigators allege that he removed a number of ballot papers from the polling station with the assistance of the station’s head, placed them in a bag and took them outside the school where the station was located.
The ballot papers were later returned to the two polling stations in coordination with the other suspects, according to the prosecutor.
Investigators also found that the ink used on the seized ballot papers differed from the ink used at the polling stations, the statement said.
Based on the findings, prosecutors said they had asked an investigating judge to examine the case with the suspects held in pretrial detention on suspicion of violating electoral procedures, forgery and participation in those offenses.
The prosecutor’s office said it would continue monitoring the case and seek the necessary legal measures to ensure the law is strictly enforced.
