Morocco climbed seven places to rank 70th out of 110 economies in the World Economic Forum’s 2026 Travel & Tourism Development Index, recording one of the strongest improvements worldwide.
The Kingdom scored 3.84 out of 7, up 5.5% from its recalculated 2024 score. That improvement was more than twice the global average of 2.1% and placed Morocco among the 10 fastest-improving economies in the latest edition, alongside countries including Albania, Vietnam, Qatar, Malaysia and Thailand.
The ranking measures the conditions that allow tourism to develop sustainably, rather than visitor numbers or tourism revenue themselves. Its 17 pillars cover areas including air connectivity, tourism infrastructure, cultural and natural resources, digital readiness, price competitiveness, safety and environmental sustainability.
Morocco’s improvement comes as the Middle East and North Africa recorded the second-fastest regional gains globally, with average scores rising 2.5% between 2024 and 2026. The WEF highlighted cultural resources, tourism services and infrastructure and demand sustainability among the region’s main areas of progress.
The Forum cautions that comparisons with earlier published rankings should use the historical figures recalculated for the 2026 edition, because changes in data, methodology and country coverage can alter previous positions. Under those revised figures, Morocco gained seven places from 2024 and one place from 2019.
Globally, Japan topped the 2026 index, followed by the United States, Spain, Australia and France. Ninety-two percent of ranked economies improved their scores over the past two years.
