Tangier Mayor Mounir Limouri denied fleeing Morocco to avoid questioning in an expanding investigation into suspected electoral fraud, saying Sunday that he traveled to Spain for business and would return to Tangier within days.
Limouri, who is also the PAM’s provincial official in Tangier-Assilah, said he left Morocco normally and was not subject to a search order or judicial summons at the time of his departure.
“I will be in Tangier in the coming days to appear before the judiciary and answer everything,” he said.
His comments came a day after Hespress reported that a search notice had since been issued for him in connection with the investigation into irregularities at Al Quds School during the September 23 parliamentary election.
Prosecutors said the case began after a man was detained with a bag containing ballot papers. Five suspects have since been arrested, including two polling-station presidents and their deputies.
According to the prosecutor, preliminary findings indicate that the man carrying the bag was a deputy polling-station president and is suspected, with the president’s help, of removing ballots from the station, placing them in a bag and later returning them to the relevant polling stations in coordination with others.
Investigators also found that ink used on the seized ballots differed from that used inside the polling stations. Prosecutors have referred the case to an investigating judge over suspected offenses involving the integrity of electoral operations, forgery and complicity.
The PAM has denied involvement and described attempts to link the party to the incident as a politically motivated campaign.
