Rain returns Monday as temperatures drop across northern and central Morocco

Rain is expected to return across parts of Morocco on Monday as temperatures fall noticeably in northern and central regions before beginning to rise again from Tuesday, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology.

DGM spokesperson Houssine Youabed said dense clouds carrying rain or localized showers are expected Monday across the Mediterranean coast, Rif, Saiss, phosphate and Oulmès plateaus, the Atlas Mountains and neighboring western areas.

Scattered rain is also possible across the northern and central plains, the southeast, Oriental region and northwestern parts of the southern provinces.

Temperatures will drop markedly across northern and central Morocco, while the south will remain relatively warm.

The shift follows unstable weather on Sunday, when the DGM issued an orange alert for Boulemane, Azilal, Ifrane and Midelt, warning of 20–30 millimeters of thundery rain accompanied by hail and strong wind gusts.

Temperatures are expected to begin rising again Tuesday, particularly across inland plains and the southern provinces. Thunderstorms may persist over the High and Middle Atlas, especially along their eastern slopes, while relatively strong winds are forecast in parts of the Oriental region and Middle Atlas.

From Wednesday through the end of the week, relatively warm conditions are expected to continue in the southeast and southern provinces. Low clouds, drizzle or fog may develop near the coasts overnight and during the morning, while unstable clouds could continue producing showers or thunderstorms over the Atlas ranges and surrounding areas.

The latest change follows an unusually warm September. The DGM said the first 20 days of September 2026 were the warmest recorded nationally for that period since 1981. Summer 2026 as a whole averaged 1.07°C above the 1991–2020 reference period, making it Morocco’s eighth-warmest summer since 1981.
