Judicial police have opened an investigation into an attack on a local office of Morocco’s Authenticity and Modernity Party, known as PAM, in Settat, according to local Hespress AR sources.
The investigation was launched on the instructions of the public prosecutor’s office after the party’s office was allegedly vandalized just hours after the start of the electoral campaign for Morocco’s Sept. 23 parliamentary elections.
Police are reviewing surveillance camera footage in the area in an effort to identify those responsible for the attack, according to Hespress AR sources.
PAM’s Settat provincial office condemned the incident, saying the attack caused material damage and constituted an assault on the principles of political pluralism and the right to differ.
The party said the incident would not deter it from continuing its political activities or from defending its principles and working in the public interest.
PAM called on the relevant authorities and security services to conduct a prompt and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the incident, identify those responsible and take legal action against anyone found to have been involved.
The party also urged political actors to prioritize dialogue and respect for political institutions and parties, describing these as essential to protecting pluralism and Morocco’s democratic process.
According to accounts circulating locally, a group of unidentified people attacked the PAM office in Settat on Tuesday, damaging office equipment and other property.
The incident has drawn concern among local observers, who said such acts should not disrupt the electoral process.
