Morocco’s Royal Cabinet announced Friday that MINURSO’s mandate had not been renewed by the UN Security Council, describing the development as a significant step toward the definitive closure of the Sahara dispute at the United Nations.
In a statement, the Royal Cabinet said the mission’s personnel, vehicles, equipment and symbols should be withdrawn from Morocco’s southern provinces in the coming days, bringing an end to 35 years of operations.
The statement also said the non-renewal should lead to the removal of the Sahara issue from the Security Council’s agenda and the suspension of the UN-led political process.
Morocco reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire and said it would continue diplomatic efforts to secure international support for autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.
