The UN Security Council rejected a Russian-drafted resolution on the Sahara on Friday after the United States vetoed the proposal, leaving both competing plans for extending MINURSO’s mandate without approval less than 24 hours before its expiration.
The Russian proposal received just three votes in favor, falling short of the nine required for adoption. The United States, a permanent Council member, voted against it.
The vote followed Russia’s veto of an American resolution that had secured 11 votes in favor, one against and three abstentions.
Moscow’s proposal sought to extend MINURSO’s existing mandate for another year, until October 31, 2027, without changing the mission’s name, structure or negotiating framework.
Washington’s rejected draft would have renamed the mission MINUSO, removing the reference to a referendum, and made Morocco’s autonomy initiative the sole basis for future negotiations.
