Moroccan gendarmerie units thwarted an international drug trafficking attempt over the weekend, seizing more than four tons of cannabis resin in the coastal city of Azemmour, according to security sources.
Special teams from the Royal Gendarmerie and intelligence services in El Jadida and Azemmour tracked two suspicious vehicles parked in the Al Wifaq and Qamra neighborhoods. Acting on coordinated intelligence, gendarmes from Azemmour, the local police, and the El Jadida command moved in to intercept.
Upon inspection, both vehicles were found loaded with cannabis resin, packaged in over 120 bundles. Authorities believe the drugs were intended for smuggling operations via the Atlantic coastline in the Doukkala region.
The vehicles were towed to the El Jadida gendarmerie headquarters, where a formal count confirmed the cargo exceeded four tons. Investigators have since launched field and technical inquiries to identify the individuals involved, trace the origin of the shipment, and determine its intended destination.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of the public prosecutor within the El Jadida judicial district.
