The Ministry of Health and Social Protection’s response to the deaths of four people at Moulay Youssef Hospital in Rabat has been met with skepticism. The ministry claimed that the deaths were unrelated to the technical malfunction of the oxygen supply system at the hospital, but union leaders and health advocates argue that the explanation is unconvincing.
Ali Lotfi, president of the Moroccan Network for the Defense of the Right to Health and Life, questioned the validity of the ministry’s statement. He said that the incident highlights broader issues with patient safety in Morocco, especially in the management of critical medical supplies like oxygen.
“The Ministry of Health’s explanation raises many doubts,” Lotfi stated. “What happened underscores that patient security in Morocco is facing significant problems, particularly due to errors in the management of essential medical supplies.”
The unionist suggested that the issue may be linked to a recent operation at Ibn Sina University Hospital, where medical resources and personnel were transferred to regional hospitals. However, he claimed the operation was poorly handled at Moulay Youssef and Lalla Aicha Hospitals in Temara.
“The hospital is overwhelmed with patients, and major issues exist. The Ministry of Health must step in to resolve these problems,” he added. “Without proper management, we can expect more issues to arise.”
The opposition party in Parliament has called for further investigation into the incident. They questioned the timing of the malfunction and whether the deaths were a result of human error, including oxygen shortages and power outages. They also criticized the Ministry’s contradictory statements regarding the cause of the malfunction.
The opposition called for an independent investigation into the incident, urging the government to address systemic issues in the country’s healthcare system. “This incident raises serious questions about the state of healthcare in Rabat,” they said, calling for better oversight and patient safety protocols in hospitals nationwide.
