A Moroccan court has sentenced the head of a local council to eight months in prison for failing to help a woman who later died after being taken from a hotel to a hospital in Midelt.
The Midelt Court of First Instance also fined the mayor of Moulablad municipality in Errachidia province MAD 2,500.
Two hotel managers were each sentenced to four months in prison, suspended, and fined MAD 5,000 for allowing prostitution on the premises and turning a blind eye to it.
The case began when authorities received a report that a young woman had been taken from a hotel in Midelt to the provincial hospital in critical condition. She later died, prompting prosecutors to order an investigation and an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Investigators found that the mayor had been with the woman at the hotel. Prosecutors then pursued charges against him for failing to provide assistance to a person in danger.
The mayor was placed in pretrial detention after appearing before prosecutors following questioning by the Royal Gendarmerie.
The court also ordered the return of seized items to their rightful owners and addressed the defendants’ deposited bail, allocating part of it to fines and court costs.
