UAE's ADNOC announces gas discovery offshore of Abu Dhabi

The UAE’s Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) announced, on February 3, that natural gas resources had been discovered off the coast of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Results from the first exploration well in the Block 2 concession, operated by Italy’s Oil and Gas company, ENI, indicate that 1.5 to 2 trillion standard cubic feet (TSCF) of raw gas may be in place, ADNOC said in a press release, published on their official website.

The discovery marks Abu Dhabi’s first offshore exploration concession, highlighting the success of block bid rounds, as well as ADNOC’s expanded strategic partnerships,

As part of ADNOC’s first competitive bid round for offshore blocks in 2019, a consortium led by Eni and PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP) was awarded exploration rights for Offshore Block 2.

“The discovery of material natural gas resources in Offshore Block 2 underscores how ADNOC’s expanded approach to strategic partnerships is enabling us to accelerate the exploration and development of Abu Dhabi’s untapped hydrocarbon resources and create long-term value for the UAE, in line with the Leadership’s wise directives,” says Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, and CEO of ADNOC.

The offshore block 2 area covers 4,033 square kilometers northwest of Abu Dhabi. In Abu Dhabi, the world’s largest combined onshore and offshore 3D seismic survey is underway and has led to the discovery of a new block of oil.

Yaser Saeed Almazrouei, ADNOC Upstream Executive Director, said, “The positive interim results recorded by our partners, Eni and PTTEP, in the exploration of Offshore Block 2 follows the recent significant discovery in Onshore Block 4, highlighting the continued success of ADNOC’s accelerated exploration and development program.”

“Both discoveries leveraged insights from ADNOC’s ongoing 3D mega seismic survey, underpinning the important role the survey is playing for us and our strategic partners as it utilizes state-of-the-art technologies to help identify new hydrocarbon resources across Abu Dhabi,” Almazrouei further added.

As drilling operations continue in Offshore Block 2, new resources are being unearthed and the potential for exploration across the block as well as Offshore Blocks 1 and 3 exploration concession areas are being explored.

The achievement follows INPEX/JODCO’s announcement in December 2021 that up to 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent had been discovered in the Onshore Block 4 Exploration Concession.

As part of the Abu Dhabi Government’s first and second competitive block bidding rounds, ADNOC offered major onshore and offshore blocks to international companies in 2018 and 2019 respectively. According to data from detailed petroleum system studies, seismic surveys, and oil and gas exploration and appraisal wells, the blocks are expected to contain multiple trillion cubic feet of natural gas and multiple billion barrels of oil.
