Morocco’s Hassan II Stadium in Benslimane is expected to be ready by early 2028, Economy and Finance Minister Fouzi Lekjaa said on Wednesday.
Speaking on the Saat Assaraha program on public broadcaster 2M on Wednesday, Lekjaa, the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), said that “construction work was progressing well.”
The stadium is expected to play a major role in reshaping urban development across Greater Casablanca, alongside transport infrastructure projects, including the tramway and rail links.
“In the coming years, we will see a new Greater Casablanca,” the minister emphasized.
Lekjaa said the stadium would allow Morocco’s national team and Casablanca clubs Raja and Wydad to play there before the 2030 World Cup.
It could also host other events ahead of the tournament, he added.
Regarding the possibility of Hassan II Stadium hosting the 2030 World Cup final, Lekjaa said international regulations and standards adopted by FIFA require the final to be held at the stadium with the largest seating capacity.
“Hassan II Stadium currently has the highest capacity,” he emphasized.
Lekjaa also stressed that Morocco’s vision for the 2030 World Cup “goes beyond hosting football matches,” as the tournament will mark 100 years since the first World Cup was held in 1930.
Lekjaa recalled that when the joint hosting of the 2030 World Cup was announced in Kigali, the goal was to go beyond football by highlighting the Mediterranean’s shared history, creating opportunities for young people on both sides of the sea, and promoting dialogue between civilizations and coexistence.
