Moroccan police arrested a driver and two passengers in Agadir on Thursday after the motorist allegedly ran over a police officer twice, reversing his vehicle to strike him again before fleeing the scene, in an incident being investigated as suspected attempted murder.
According to information obtained by Hespress, the incident began when the driver of a private vehicle ignored police orders to stop at a checkpoint near the northern entrance to Agadir and continued driving.
Officers from a motorcycle patrol unit subsequently attempted to intercept the vehicle on Mohammed V Avenue, where the driver allegedly struck one of the officers before reversing and running him over a second time.
The driver then fled, prompting a police operation that led to his arrest Thursday morning alongside two people who had been travelling with him.
Preliminary information indicates that the two passengers were intoxicated at the time of the incident.
The injured officer was transported to Agadir University Hospital for medical treatment. He remains alive and in stable condition despite the injuries sustained while performing his duties.
Investigators are treating the incident as a suspected intentional attempted homicide, particularly because the driver allegedly reversed his vehicle and struck the officer again after the initial collision.
The investigation will seek to establish whether the driver’s actions were deliberate and determine the criminal responsibility of each suspect.
All three detainees have been placed in police custody under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office.
Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the driver’s refusal to stop, the subsequent pursuit and the collision, as well as the possible involvement of the two passengers.
