A recent article by The Africa Report said Morocco’s consistent and sustained progress over the past 20 years has made it the African Development Bank’s top-ranked economy on the continent, overtaking South Africa, which had held the top position for 15 years.
It noted that while South Africa continues to experience a gradual decline in industrial competitiveness, Morocco has strengthened its position through the “sustained modernization of its productive system, the diversification of its exports, and the implementation of its industrial policy.”
It added that sectoral strategies launched by the kingdom since 2005 have helped develop industries that now play a central role in industrial production.
The report said that over the past 20 years, the aeronautics sector has become a key part of the Industrial Emergence and Recovery Plans, helping Morocco become a leading destination in Africa with more than 150 companies set up in the sector.
It mentioned that the sector generated around MAD 26.4 billion in exports in 2024, compared with MAD 7.7 billion a decade earlier.
The article also highlighted the growth of Morocco’s automotive sector since 2019, noting that the kingdom produced around 493,004 passenger cars in 2025, surpassing South Africa’s 329,600 units.
It also said that the automotive industry, Morocco’s leading export, generates nearly €19 billion in turnover and employs around 250,000 people.
Quoting Chakib Benmoussa, head of the high commission of planning, the article highlighted that Morocco’s sectoral strategies had produced positive results in some areas but fell short in others, partly due to poor coordination and limited cooperation between sectors.
