Exceptional rainfall boosts Morocco’s agriculture, water reserves

Exceptional and widespread rainfall across Morocco since mid-November 2025 is set to support a stronger agricultural season, according to the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts (DEPF) under the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

The heavy rains have facilitated soil sowing, replenished groundwater reserves, and significantly increased the levels of national dams, the DEPF noted in its February 2026 economic bulletin.

As of February 20, the national dam filling rate reached 70.7%, compared with just 27.6% a year earlier, marking a substantial increase of 43.1 percentage points. This improvement accelerated over the past two months, with an additional gain of 37.3 points recorded between December 22, 2025, and February 20, 2026. The total volume stored in these dams reached 11.8 billion cubic meters.

All of Morocco’s hydraulic basins benefited from this positive development. The Sebou basin exceeded 5 billion cubic meters as of February 17, up 2 billion cubic meters from the previous year. The Oum Er Rabia basin recorded 2.3 billion cubic meters, compared with just 254.3 million cubic meters a year ago.

Other basins also saw notable increases: Loukkos reached 1.8 billion cubic meters (+946.4 million), Souss Massa 398.8 million (+283.4 million), and Moulouya 435.7 million (+150.6 million).

On the economic front, exports in agriculture, forestry, and hunting totaled around 42.2 billion dirhams in 2025, up 3.6% compared with the previous year, following a 9.1% increase in 2024.

This combination of abundant rainfall, strengthened water reserves, and steady export growth signals a promising outlook for Morocco’s agricultural sector in 2026.
