Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology said Monday that thunderstorms will continue through Wednesday in several parts of the country, particularly the southern provinces, the High and Middle Atlas, the Rif and Saiss regions.
The agency said thunderstorms bringing 50 to 80 millimeters of rain are expected through Tuesday in Boujdour, Oued Eddahab and Aousserd. Rainfall of 30 to 50 millimeters is forecast for Laayoune, Smara and Tarfaya.
On Tuesday, tropical clouds and thunderstorms are expected to persist over the southern provinces, with localized storms possible over the High and Middle Atlas, Rif and Saiss. Northern and central plains, the Phosphate Plateau and Oulmès could also see locally heavy showers.
Moderate to relatively strong winds and gradually falling temperatures are also expected, particularly in the south, the plains west of the Atlas and the Mediterranean region, said meteorological service spokesman Hussein Youabed.
On Wednesday, thunderstorms are expected to continue over the Atlas and southern Saharan provinces. Dense clouds could also affect areas west of the Atlas, the Rif, northern parts of the eastern region, Saiss, the Phosphate Plateau and Oulmès, alongside falling temperatures in northern and central Morocco.
From Thursday through the following Wednesday, dense clouds are expected to persist over northern and central areas, while tropical air masses could extend toward the southern provinces. Moderate to relatively strong winds are also forecast in Tangier and the southern provinces, with temperatures expected to decline across much of the country.
Youabed attributed the unsettled weather to a transitional pattern linked to the start of autumn, with several air masses and pressure systems interacting over Morocco.
Warm air masses continue to affect some inland and southern areas, while an upper-level disturbance moving from Western Europe and the western Mediterranean is bringing colder air at higher altitudes. The interaction is increasing atmospheric instability and favoring the development of thunderstorms.
The weather pattern can therefore produce sharp contrasts within the same day, with relatively warm or sunny conditions in some areas and thunderstorms and rain in others, particularly over mountainous and southern regions.
