Morocco is set to transform its General Directorate of Meteorology into a National Agency, marking a major institutional shift after years of postponement.
Equipment and Water Minister Nizar Baraka confirmed that the move has been approved by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and will soon be submitted to the Government Council before going to both chambers of parliament.
The announcement was made during a meeting with trade unions as part of ongoing sectoral social dialogue.
Baraka also said talks on revising the status of river basin agencies are nearing completion, while unions welcomed progress on promotions, staff mobility rules and the planned creation of a Higher Institute of Public Works in Rabat.
However, tensions remain over the long delayed basic statute for ministry staff.
Unions say its blockage reflects political and budgetary choices rather than financial constraints and are pressing for immediate allowance increases to curb skills loss and improve working conditions.
