Istiqlal officials in Benslimane are considering disciplinary action against local elected representatives suspected of helping rival parties during Morocco’s Sept. 23 legislative elections, party sources told Hespress.
The internal review follows former Industry and Trade Minister Ryad Mezzour’s third-place finish in the constituency, behind RNI candidate Yassine Ouakacha and PAM’s Karim Ziyadi. Mezzour nevertheless secured Benslimane’s third parliamentary seat.
Party sources said Istiqlal had expected to perform better in a province where it controls several major municipalities, including Benslimane, Bouznika and Mansouria.
A detailed report has reportedly been prepared for the party’s executive committee and Secretary-General Nizar Baraka, with possible measures ranging from disciplinary proceedings to requests for removal from party membership.
Sources accused some local elected officials of working with rival candidates during the campaign, allegations that have fueled calls inside the party for sanctions.
