Morocco plans to roll out 5G internet in preparation for hosting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Digital Transition Minister Amal Al-Falah announced Monday.
The government aims to enhance internet access across the country, particularly in rural and mountainous regions where connectivity remains poor. Investments in the digital transition exceeded 8.4 billion dirhams ($800 million) in 2023, Al-Falah said during a parliamentary session.
Efforts to improve coverage are part of the National Plan for High-Speed and Very High-Speed Internet Development. The first phase, spanning 2018 to 2024, brought second-, third-, and fourth-generation telecom services to over 10,640 areas, achieving a 99% implementation rate. Remote regions facing geographical challenges will be connected via satellite, Al-Falah noted.
A second phase of the plan will expand coverage to 1,800 rural areas by 2026. Additionally, 6,300 public administrative sites are set to be equipped with fiber-optic technology by the same year.
The minister highlighted a satellite internet initiative, which provides financial aid of up to 2,500 dirhams ($243) per subscription for residents in areas without terrestrial coverage. The program is expected to benefit up to 4,000 users annually.
The government plans to achieve 25% 5G coverage by 2026 and expand it to 70% by 2030, with full coverage in cities hosting World Cup matches.
In response to parliamentary concerns about administrative corruption, Al-Falah emphasized the government’s commitment to combating the issue.
She acknowledged shortcomings in the Corruption Perceptions Index, which evaluates Morocco based on seven of 13 data sources. The National Authority for Integrity, Prevention, and the Fight Against Corruption has been tasked with establishing more precise national indicators.
Al-Falah noted that 76% of the projects under the National Anti-Corruption Strategy have been implemented. “We must continue to prioritize education, awareness, and enforcement to address corruption effectively,” she said.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to both digital transformation and ethical governance, aligning with Morocco’s broader modernization goals.
