US Captain Asa D. Kim, chief of staff of the military component of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in the Sahara (MINURSO), has concluded his assignment and officially departed Laayoune, according to an informed UN source.

His departure comes as the UN Security Council discusses the mission’s future, with a US-drafted resolution reportedly proposing changes to its mandate, structure and operational responsibilities.

The proposals reportedly include reconsidering MINURSO’s current role, potentially changing its name and redefining its activities as part of broader US efforts to review longstanding UN peacekeeping operations and their costs.

Washington’s proposed approach would place greater emphasis on the political process aimed at resolving the Sahara dispute.

Security Council discussions are expected to determine whether the mission’s next mandate will introduce substantive changes to its operations and field presence.
