Government approves MAD 1,000 wage increase for civil servants
Monday 29 April 2024 - 12:50

The government agreed on Monday to an increase of MAD 1,000 in the salaries of public administration employees, as part of the April social dialogue. The announcement comes on the eve of May 1st.

The Moroccan executive has agreed to a series of demands from labor unions, notably by accepting a monthly increase for civil servants in the public administration, local authorities and other public institutions.

The agreement reached between the government and the unions stipulates that this increase will be paid in two instalments, one on July 1 and a second on July 1, 2025. This applies to all civil servants, with the exception of health, national education and higher education personnel, who have already benefited from an increase in recent rounds of social dialogue.

Last week, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, acknowledged a problem in the salaries of citizens in the face of galloping inflation and rising living standards for households.

He thus recognized the need to increase private sector wages. In the private sector, the government has decided to raise the minimum wage between 2025 and 2026.

In detail, the guaranteed interprofessional minimum wage (SMIG) is to be increased by 10% in two stages: 5% from January 1, 2025 and 5% from January 1, 2026.

The same applies to the agricultural minimum wage (SMAG), which is to be increased by 5% on April 1, 2025, and a further 5% on April 1, 2026, particularly for the industrial and commercial sectors, as well as for the liberal professions.

The government has also approved an income tax (IR) reduction of MAD 400 per month for middle-income categories. The income threshold exempt from income tax will be raised from MAD 30,000 to MAD 40,000, so that people with a monthly income of MAD 6,000 will benefit from lower income tax.
