A report by the Ministry of Water and Logistics said that Morocco’s water resources are being significantly threatened due to the rapid silting of dams.

Dams are losing storage capacity at an alarming rate of 100 million cubic meters per year, translating to a projected loss of 25% of current capacity (20 billion cubic meters) by 2050 and a staggering 50% by 2100.

The report describes this silting as a “dangerous phenomenon.” With current water supply challenges, the future looks bleak for generations to come.

While increasing dam capacity to 25 billion cubic meters by 2030 and 32 billion cubic meters by 2050 is planned, the report concedes the environmental impact of these projects, stressing the necessity of dams for water and food security, despite the trade-offs.

The report also explores water usage within Morocco. Agriculture is the primary consumer, understandably requiring large volumes for crop production.

While individual water consumption is relatively low, ensuring national food security necessitates significant agricultural water use. He estimates that 80% of water allocated to agriculture is essential for food production.

The report touches on population growth stating that while a decline in the fertility rate to 1.25% offers a glimmer of hope for stabilizing the population by 2045-2050, challenges remain.

An aging population may require foreign labor, and increased lifespans and changing consumption patterns will continue to pressure water resources.
