Morocco’s major reservoirs were 70.6% full on Monday, nearly double the level recorded a year earlier despite the gradual summer decline in surface water reserves, official data showed.

Stored water reached 12.02 billion cubic metres out of a total capacity of 17.03 billion, according to the Equipment and Water Ministry.

At the same point in 2025, reservoirs held 6.13 billion cubic metres, equivalent to a filling rate of 35.98%. The ministry said national stocks had increased by more than 99% year on year.

Northern and western basins recorded the strongest levels. Tensift led with 86.28%, followed by Loukkos at 84.13% and Sebou at 83.75%, where reserves exceeded 4.49 billion cubic metres.

The Bouregreg basin, which supplies major urban centres along the Rabat-Casablanca corridor, stood at 82.95%.

Oum Er-Rbia, which had been severely affected by drought, recovered to 62%, holding about 3.1 billion cubic metres.

Conditions remained weaker in the south and southeast. Souss-Massa stood at 50.71%, Ziz-Guir-Rheris at 42.81% and Drâa-Oued Noun at 35.42%.

The figures improve Morocco’s short-term drinking water and irrigation outlook, although regional disparities continue to support calls for expanded inter-basin transfers, desalination and wastewater reuse.
