The new direct flight connecting the Israeli capital to the city of Essaouira, operated by the Israeli airline company “Arkia”, saw the light of day on Thursday at Ben Gurion Airport, Tel Aviv.
As part of the agreement signed between the Moroccan Tourism National Office (ONMT) and Arkia company last July 18, the Israeli company promised to secure one flight per week, offering 11,000 seats.
With the presence of Abderrahim Bayoud, the head of the Moroccan liaison office in Tel Aviv, the mayor of Essaouira, authorities from Ben Gurion Airport, and representatives of tourism actors from both countries, the new airline service was launched as part of Morocco and Israel continuous effort to foster the aerial connections and promote tourism activity in both countries.
To promote the launch of Essaouira-Tel Aviv airline service, ONMT alongside Arkia company adopted a variety of communication channels, including TV, press, posters, and online platforms, the aim of which is to introduce Essaouira as a tourist destination, shedding light on the richness of the city and the Moroccan-Jewish cultural heritage.
The number of Israeli tourist arrivals to Morocco has seen a remarkable increase since 2019. By way of illustration, the number of tourists in the first half of 2023 saw a rise of 146% compared to the same period in 2019. In 2022, approximately 75,000 Israeli visits to Morocco were scheduled, making an 87% growth compared to 2019.
The increase in tourists is the fruit of “Light In Action”, a strategy initiated by the ONMT the aim of which is to encourage tourism and contribute to the ministry’s objective which is to attract nearly 17.5 million visitors to the country over the next three years and integrate Morocco into the top 10 of the most popular destinations in the world by 2026.
