Four Moroccan political parties welcomed the non-renewal of MINURSO’s mandate on Saturday, backing King Mohammed VI’s position on the Sahara dispute, while the Popular Movement called for the issue to be removed from the United Nations agenda.
The National Rally of Independents (RNI), Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), Popular Movement (MP) and Constitutional Union (UC) issued statements following Friday’s Security Council session, which failed to adopt either an American or Russian draft resolution.
The Popular Movement explicitly called for MINURSO’s termination and the withdrawal of the Sahara issue from UN consideration, arguing that the mission had failed to adapt to changing diplomatic circumstances.
The party also criticized Russia’s veto of the US-sponsored resolution, accusing Moscow of attempting to revive Cold War divisions.
PAM said the failure to extend MINURSO’s mandate should result in the mission ending its operations on the ground, describing the development as a step toward closing the Sahara dispute.
The party reaffirmed its support for autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the sole political solution.
The RNI praised the Royal Office’s October 30 statement and pledged continued political mobilization in support of Morocco’s territorial integrity.
It also welcomed international backing for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, describing recent diplomatic developments as a shift away from managing the dispute toward consolidating Morocco’s territorial position.
The Constitutional Union similarly endorsed the Royal Office’s position, highlighting what it described as growing international support for autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.
It also reiterated Morocco’s commitment to maintaining the ceasefire while protecting its territorial integrity.
