The United Nations “categorically” denied news about a visit of Staffan de Mistura, the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to the Sahara, to the Moroccan city of Laayoune, and his rumored scheduled official meetings with civil activists and local elected authorities.
Stephane Dujarric, the official spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, said that Staffan de Mistura has been facing many news and rumors in the recent period.
The UN official confirmed, in the daily press briefing provided by the Office of the Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, that “there is nothing official related to the visit of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to the region,” and added: “There are no new details that can be shared with the media on this particular point.”
National and international media reports were anticipating that Staffan de Mistura, the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Sahara, would arrive in Rabat, ahead of the scheduled visit to Laayoune, within the framework of a tour that includes parties to the regional conflict over the Western Sahara.
