Activist Greta Thunberg detained during protest in Norway
Wednesday 1 March 2023 - 13:41

Environmental activist Greta Thunberg was briefly detained by Norway police on Wednesday, during a pro-Sami protest in Oslo.

The Sami are the indigenous people of the Sápmi region, which today encompasses large parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and of the Kola Peninsula in Russia.

The protesters are demanding that the government removes wind turbines from reindeer pastures on Sami Indigenous land. Norway’s supreme court ruled in 2021 that two wind farms at Fosen violated Sami rights under international conventions, but the turbines remain in operation.

Protesters, including Greta Thunberg, believe that a transition to green energy should not come at the expense of Sami rights, whose reindeer farms have been affected by the turbines.
