Moroccan police arrested a woman Saturday suspected of causing a fatal hit-and-run that killed a police officer while he was on duty in Casablanca, authorities said.
The officer, a police guard assigned to the Anfa security district, was conducting traffic-control operations when a speeding car struck him and fled the scene, according to preliminary findings from the investigation.
The officer died while being transported to a hospital, the General Directorate of National Security said.
Investigators used footage from a camera carried by members of the police patrol to identify the vehicle and trace its license plate, leading to the arrest of its female driver.
Authorities said the woman was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
The suspect and a person who was accompanying her were placed under judicial investigation supervised by the competent public prosecutor’s office. The investigation will seek to establish the circumstances of the crash and determine the alleged offenses committed by those involved.
Separately, Morocco’s director-general of national security and domestic intelligence ordered an exceptional posthumous promotion for the officer, describing the measure as recognition of his sacrifice and service.
The Mohammed VI Foundation for the Social Works of National Security Employees was also instructed to provide the officer’s family with necessary assistance and support and to offer condolences following his death.
The investigation remains ongoing.
