In his message on Tuesday to commemorate the International Day of Education, Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, emphasized the need to put into practice the commitments made at a historic UN summit last year to improve education worldwide.

He urged countries to deliver education systems “that can support equal societies, dynamic economies, and the limitless dreams of every learner in the world.”

“To invest in people, prioritize education” is the theme for this year’s International Day of Education.

At the event’s discussion, girls and women in Afghanistan are given special attention because they are not allowed to go to high school or college since the Taliban took power in August 2021.

Education, according to the Secretary-General, is a fundamental human right and the foundation of all societies, economies, and human potential, as read on the UN’s official website.

He did, however, issue a warning that without sufficient investment, this potential may “wither on the vine.”

“It has always been shocking to me that education has been given such a low priority in many government policies and in international cooperation instruments,” said the UN official.
