Moroccan student Zakaria Abisourour won the country’s first silver medal at the International Olympiad in Informatics on Saturday, August 15, placing 63rd among 375 contestants in Tashkent, official competition results showed.
The Safi student scored 332.42 points out of 600, clearing the silver-medal threshold of 303.28. Moroccan Olympiads in Informatics said the result made him the highest-ranked Arab and African contestant at the 2026 competition.
Abisourour improved sharply from the 2025 edition, when he ranked 190th and received an honorable mention.
Mohamed Cherki of Rabat received an honorable mention after placing 216th. Morocco’s four-member team also included Yassir Salama of Casablanca and Mohamed Ada of Laayoune. Anas Abou El Kalam and Mohamed Amine Methid coached the delegation.
The students qualified through national selection rounds that began in October and initially involved more than 1,000 participants.
Morocco has participated in the competition 11 times since 1990. Its cumulative record now stands at one silver medal, three bronze medals and four honorable mentions.
The International Olympiad in Informatics tests secondary-school students through individual programming and algorithmic problem-solving contests. The 2026 edition ran from August 9 to 16 and brought together delegations from 97 countries.
