Casablanca tramway workers’ postpone strike amid dialogue with authorities
Monday 10 January 2022 - 22:06

The Casablanca tramway workers’ strike, which was originally scheduled for this Monday, January 10, was canceled following the intervention of local authorities.

According to sources, Casablanca authorities have initiated a dialogue with the union of employees of the tramway and stated they “are committed to assuming their responsibilities in relation to the management of public transport service in the city,” reads a statement from the union affiliated to the National Workers Union.

The Ministry of the Interior’s intervention, through the wilaya of the region Casablanca-Settat, has avoided major disruption to the city.

The union office explained that employees are aware of the responsibility they assume to ensure the transport of thousands of Casablancais and they chose to privilege dialogue.

The office added that the decision to postpone the strike serves the public interest, as many residents rely on the tramway to move around the city.

The union still warns against any attempt to block the dialogue process or ignore the grievances of employees considering that the option of the strike is still possible “if authorities do not assume their responsibility of dialogue launched today with all stakeholders.”
