The government of the province of Maniema, located in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), officially declared measles as an epidemic in this part of the African country.
The epidemic was reported after the confirmation of samples sent to the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB), said the acting governor of Maniema, Affani Idrissa Mangala, according to MAP.
He added that the province has so far recorded 458 cases of measles, including 17 deaths, calling on the population to be vigilant and to consult the nearest health centers in case of fever, generalized rash, conjunctivitis, cough and cold.
In the capital Kinshasa, four zones have also been affected by measles since the end of August, with some severe cases reported in the outlying areas of Kinshasa.
