The UK became the first country in the world to approve Molnupiravir’s anti-COVID-19 antiviral pill, aiming to step up efforts against the spread of the virus.
This move came after Molnupiravir’s anti-COVID-19 antiviral pill proved efficient and safe use recognized by scientific experts, making it the first oral anti-COVID-19 drug to be approved.
The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) recommended the drug, Molnupiravir, for use in people with mild to moderate COVID-19 and at least one risk factor for developing severe illness, such as obesity, older age diabetes, and heart disease, according to Reuters.
The drug is set to be administered as soon as possible following a positive COVID-19 test and within five days of the onset of symptoms.
The Molnupiravir’s drugmaker Merck said viral sequencing done so far shows Molnupiravir is effective against all variants of the COVID-19 virus, including the new strain of the Delta variant, which has led to the recent worldwide surge in hospitalizations and deaths.
Molnupiravir anti-COVID-19 pill’s developers the US drugmaker Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics expect to produce 10 million courses of treatment by the end of 2021.
The company has committed to supply 1.7 million courses of Molnupiravir at a price of USD700 per course.
