Morocco’s National Press Council has called on domestic media organizations to strengthen their coverage of the Sahara dispute and counter what it described as misleading foreign narratives following the UN Security Council’s failure to renew MINURSO’s mandate on October 30.
In a statement, the council welcomed the Royal Cabinet’s position on the mission’s departure and praised Morocco’s diplomatic efforts under King Mohammed VI.
It accused some foreign media outlets of promoting separatist narratives and serving political agendas, arguing that such coverage misrepresents the historical and legal dimensions of the dispute.
The council urged Moroccan news organizations to respond through professional journalism grounded in accuracy, objectivity and ethical standards.
It also called for stronger editorial strategies, improved technical capabilities and greater investment in journalists’ professional training to address international coverage of the Sahara.
The statement places the media’s role within Morocco’s wider diplomatic efforts as the UN mission’s mandate ends and the dispute enters a new phase.
