Police in Marrakech arrested a man on Wednesday on suspicion of extorting foreign tourists while illegally working as an unlicensed tour guide, authorities said.
According to a statement from Marrakech’s police headquarters, the suspect allegedly targeted two foreign tourists in the city’s old medina, demanding money to which he was not entitled while falsely claiming to provide tourism-related guiding services without the required authorization.
The case came to light after a video showing the alleged incident circulated widely on social media. Investigators subsequently identified the suspect and arrested him on Wednesday.
The suspect has been placed in police custody pending a judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office.
Authorities said the investigation aims to establish all the circumstances, details, and motives surrounding the case.
