Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued a new orange-level weather alert, warning of an intense heatwave expected to affect several provinces across the country, including parts of the southern regions, through Tuesday.
According to the weather agency, temperatures are forecast to range between 45°C and 47°C (113°F–117°F) in the provinces of Oued Eddahab, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Tata, Taroudant, Zagora, Errachidia, Aousserd, and Boujdour.
Temperatures between 42°C and 45°C (108°F–113°F) are also expected in Marrakech, Beni Mellal, Fquih Ben Salah, and Kalaat Sraghna from Sunday, Aug. 2, through Tuesday, Aug. 4.
In a separate orange-level alert, the DGM warned of very hot conditions between Sunday and Monday in several other regions, with temperatures ranging from 42°C to 45°C in Agadir-Ida Ou Tanane, Larache, Youssoufia, Khénifra, Taourirt, Berkane, Settat, Chichaoua, Guelmim, Taza, Al Haouz, Laayoune, Dakhla, Oued Eddahab, and Aousserd.
The agency also forecast highs of 39°C to 42°C (102°F–108°F) in Sidi Bennour, Chtouka Aït Baha, Inzegane-Aït Melloul, Mediouna, Safi, Tiznit, Essaouira, Driouch, Nador, and Oujda-Angad.
The heatwave is being driven by hot air masses moving northward from the Sahara, resulting in a significant rise in temperatures across Morocco’s southern and inland regions.
The meteorological agency urged residents, particularly in the affected provinces, to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day, stay well hydrated, and take precautionary measures, especially for children, older adults, and people with chronic illnesses.
