Brazil’s imports of Moroccan fertilizers rose by more than 30% between January and October, according to new data from the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC), based on figures from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services.

During the period, Brazil imported more than $559 million worth of fertilizers from Morocco, up from $429 million in the same months last year.

The data also show that Brazil’s imports from Morocco exceed its exports to the North African kingdom. Between January and October, Brazilian purchases of Moroccan products reached $1.31 billion, an annual increase of 3.6%.

Phosphate-based and blended fertilizers topped Brazil’s list of imports from Morocco. Meanwhile, Morocco’s imports from Brazil fell by 5%, settling at around $1 billion.

Brazil’s main exports to Morocco included sugar, corn and livestock. Sugar sales to the kingdom totaled more than $462 million, marking a year-on-year drop of about 35.2%.

Overall trade between the two countries reached $2.3 billion in the first 10 months of the year, down 0.3% from the same period last year.

According to official figures, Brazil’s fertilizer imports in 2024 reached their highest level in five years, with 44.3 million tons unloaded at Brazilian ports, an 8.3% increase from 2023.

Morocco ranked as Brazil’s third-largest supplier of fertilizers last year, exporting $1.59 billion worth of products and accounting for 11% of total imports. Russia led with $3.5 billion (23%), followed by China with more than $2 billion.

The National Supply Company (Conab) said in a logistics report that the Port of Paranaguá was among the main entry points for fertilizers, handling 11 million tons, while ports in the country’s “northern arc” received 7.52 million tons from global suppliers.
