OCP Green Energy has built Morocco’s first lithium iron phosphate battery storage system at its Benguerir mining site, adding 125 megawatt-hours of storage capacity to help shift solar power into peak-demand hours and reduce electricity costs at the industrial site.

The system has a power capacity of 25 megawatts and can store electricity for up to five hours, OCP Group said. The company expects it to cut the site’s electricity bill by about 25% during peak hours by storing solar production when supply is abundant and releasing it when demand rises.

The project represents an investment of about 170 million dirhams and is backed by $20 million in financing from the Clean Technology Fund, a program supported by the African Development Bank for renewable-energy and storage projects.

The battery system is connected to the existing solar plant at Benguerir and is designed to operate on a daily charging and discharging cycle. OCP said it has an expected operating life of 25 years.

The company selected lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, batteries because of their thermal stability, safety and durability. The system is also designed to reduce fluctuations in solar generation, improve the reliability of electricity supplied to OCP’s industrial facilities and provide grid-support services including frequency regulation and reactive power compensation.

The storage project follows the commissioning of OCP Green Energy’s first 202 MW of photovoltaic capacity earlier this year. That portfolio includes 67 MW at Benguerir, 30 MW at Foum Tizi and 105 MW at Oulad Farès in Khouribga, with the plants already supplying renewable electricity to OCP mining and industrial sites.

OCP Green Energy signed a contract with technology supplier Envision in late 2025 to supply and commission the battery system. Equipment was ordered during the final quarter of the year, according to the company.

Omar Kadir, managing director of OCP Green Energy, said storage was the next stage of the company’s renewable-energy strategy because it allows variable solar production to be matched with the continuous electricity needs of industrial operations.

The project also fits into OCP’s broader work on battery materials. OCP and Mohammed VI Polytechnic University are developing LFP materials derived from phosphoric acid, drawing on the group’s phosphate-processing expertise. Their research has generated proprietary production processes and material technologies, according to OCP.

The company said engineering studies, project supervision and the civil and electrical integration work for the Benguerir storage system were carried out entirely by Moroccan teams.
