A Moroccan citizen identified as Reda was released Friday from Koutoukalé prison in Niger after being acquitted of all charges, according to the Joint Committee for the Defense of Islamist Detainees.
The committee reported that Reda is currently staying at a hotel in Niamey, awaiting the completion of consular procedures by Morocco’s embassy to obtain travel documents that will allow his return home.
Reda had spent one year and seven months in detention without proven charges, the committee said, noting that he had been living across several African countries seeking employment and better living conditions.
In a statement, his family expressed deep gratitude to Moroccan authorities for securing his release and to the committee for its continued support.
They said they look forward to his return after months of hardship and deteriorating health conditions inside the prison.
