Algeria has been conducting a covert destabilisation campaign in the Sahel for several months, aiming to weaken Niger’s post coup authorities, according to a report by Sahel Intelligence, citing intelligence sources.
The publication alleges that the operation relies on mercenaries and local armed groups acting as proxies along poorly controlled border areas, with activities said to be closely monitored by the United States.
The report argues that Algeria has sought to exploit regional instability following regime changes in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, in order to preserve strategic and energy interests.
According to analysts cited, the alleged objective is to pressure Niger’s new leadership into reviving suspended energy cooperation, including a Nigeria linked gas pipeline project.
Sahel Intelligence further claims that Western and Israeli security experts view Algeria as a growing risk factor for regional stability, warning that continued escalation could have spillover effects beyond the Sahel, potentially reaching Europe.
