Gambia has confirmed its first case of Mpox, the viral disease formerly known as monkeypox, according to a statement released Tuesday by the country’s Ministry of Health.
The infection was detected through routine surveillance mechanisms, prompting immediate public health measures, including contact tracing and genetic sequencing to identify the viral subtype, the ministry said.
Mpox is caused by a virus from the same family as smallpox and typically presents with high fever and skin lesions.
The detection places Gambia among the growing list of African nations reporting Mpox infections.
According to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), over 30,000 cases have been confirmed across the continent since early 2024.
No additional details were provided about the patient’s condition or travel history. Authorities say they are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further spread
