A 13-year-old Moroccan boy staying at a children’s reception center in Ceuta has tested positive for mpox and is receiving treatment in isolation, Europa Press reported Friday, September 18, citing health sources.

Spain’s Carlos III Health Institute confirmed the infection Thursday after health authorities submitted samples for laboratory testing, according to the agency’s report.

The child remains at the center under medical supervision. Health services have introduced measures to prevent further infections, the sources said.

The boy arrived in Ceuta during the mass crossings in late July. Authorities ordered testing after he developed symptoms consistent with mpox. The report did not establish where or when he contracted the virus.

Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, spreads mainly through close contact with an infected person. It can also spread through contaminated objects and cause a painful rash, fever and swollen lymph nodes, according to the World Health Organization.
