A nurse, Ilyas Chetioui, recently assigned to the Ait Hamou Ou Said health center in Tinghir province, performed a life-saving intervention, delivering a baby under challenging circumstances in a remote, isolated village.
The incident began Sunday afternoon when Nurse Chetioui was urgently called to the home of a woman in labor in a mountain village cut off by floodwaters from recent storms. Roads and paths to the nearest equipped health facility were impassable.
After assessing the situation, Chetioui realized the woman was facing a complicated birth requiring expertise beyond his general nursing training. Attempts to transport her to the Boumalne Dades hospital, where specialized midwives are available, were impossible due to the severe flooding and geographical isolation.
Facing a critical emergency alone, the young nurse opted to proceed with the delivery on-site. He used modern communication technology, initiating live video calls with experienced midwives at the Tinghir provincial hospital and another midwife at the Amsmrir health center. Coordinating closely with them via video, he began the delivery process.
Despite the difficult conditions, lack of adequate equipment, and immense pressure, the procedure lasted over an hour. Colleagues reported that around 6:30 PM, a healthy baby girl was successfully delivered. Nurse Chetioui continued monitoring both mother and newborn until weather conditions improved and safe transport to a medical facility for follow-up care could be arranged.
Adding to the complexity, Nurse Chetioui does not speak the local Amazigh language, the only language spoken by the pregnant woman. He relied on sign language to communicate throughout the labor and delivery, demonstrating remarkable adaptability under extreme pressure.
The intervention has been widely praised by local health and rights groups. It has also renewed discussions about the urgent need to improve health infrastructure in rural and mountainous areas, and to provide continuous training and necessary equipment for frontline healthcare workers who often face critical, time-sensitive decisions with limited resources.
Ilyas Chetioui is being hailed locally as a symbol of professionalism and dedication, highlighting the often unseen challenges faced daily by healthcare professionals in Morocco’s remote regions.
