During a session in New York on Wednesday, Omar Hilale, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN, emphasized the urgent need for a Middle East free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.
Speaking at the Sixth Conference on establishing such a zone in the region, he highlighted the critical moment the world faces, marked by a rapid erosion of disarmament and non-proliferation efforts, compounded by growing geopolitical shocks and a disregard for existing multilateral instruments.
Hilale warned that every day without tangible progress toward nuclear disarmament brings the international community closer to devastating consequences. He stressed that the window of opportunity to ensure a stable and prosperous world free of nuclear weapons is narrowing.
He also pointed out that through open, transparent, and inclusive discussions, the conference members can overcome obstacles and reaffirm their commitment to establishing a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction. The success of these efforts depends on consistent international support and the effective implementation of past commitments.
This year’s conference features participation from all Middle Eastern countries, including Iran, while Israel continues to boycott the event. The conference is held under the 2018 UN General Assembly decision and is in line with the 1995 NPT Conference’s resolution on a future legally binding treaty for a weapons-free Middle East.
