Air passenger traffic reached a new record of 32.7 million passengers by the end of 2024, marking a 21% increase compared to the same period the previous year, according to the Directorate of Economic Studies and Financial Forecasts (DEPF).
This performance is attributed to a 20% increase in international passenger flow and a 30% rise in domestic travelers, the DEPF noted in its latest economic report, citing statistics from the Moroccan Airports Authority (ONDA).
A new “Airports 2030” strategy has been announced, aiming to transform Moroccan airports into strategic, connected, and attractive hubs that align with the country’s economic and tourism ambitions, as well as major upcoming sporting events, according to the same source.
Among its key initiatives, the strategy includes modernization efforts and the development of new infrastructure to meet capacity demands amid the current and projected surge in air traffic.
For instance, the capacity of Casablanca’s Mohammed V Airport, currently at 14 million passengers, is expected to increase to 35 million by 2029. Other airports, including those in Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fez, will also undergo major expansion projects to double their capacities.
Additionally, Morocco’s flag carrier, Royal Air Maroc, plans to expand its fleet, increasing the number of aircraft from the current 50 to 200 by 2037.
