King Mohammed VI said Friday that Morocco’s current migration-cooperation model has become outdated despite producing tangible results, calling for a new framework better adapted to recurring migration crises.
Addressing Parliament at the opening of Morocco’s new legislative term, the King said cooperation with Spain had advanced significantly, including on irregular migration, but remained contrained by legal provisions and court decisions disconnected from conditions on the ground.
He said those constraints hinder the return of unaccompanied minors and people he described as falsely claiming asylum, while creating opportunities for criminal networks.
The King also rejected what he called irresponsible political and media statements surrounding migration cooperation.
The King said Morocco’s partnerships are political choices entered into voluntarily and would not be subject to pressure, threats or blackmail.
Morocco, he added, will present its partners with a new strategic document intended to establish a different model of cooperation centered on shared development and economic competitiveness.
