A patient has been hospitalized with a severe case of avian influenza infection in Louisiana, the first such case in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.
There have been a total of 61 cases in the United States in the current outbreak, but all the others were mild. The new patient had exposure to sick and dead birds in backyard flocks.
