Morocco’s central bank is overseeing banks’ progress in implementing a binding charter for people with disabilities, which despite having been signed in March 2023, human rights activists and disability associations allege neglect by banking institutions.
The Bank has organized workshops on digital accessibility and developed a unified action plan for banks.
It urges banks to swiftly implement the charter’s provisions, train staff, and address complaints promptly.
Banks are expected to accelerate account opening and management processes while ensuring customer independence. The Bank monitors implementation, addressing challenges and ensuring banks fulfill their commitments.
While most banks have pledged immediate compliance, some have faced delays due to procedural requirements. The Bank has resolved complaints and emphasizes employee training on disability rights.
Regarding digital and physical accessibility, banks commit to equipping new branches and gradually upgrading existing ones. Data collection and regulatory compliance are ongoing.
