President of the National Human Rights Council, Amina Bouayach called on the government and parliament to make every effort towards abolishing the death penalty in Morocco. She emphasized the need for ratification of various international texts related to this issue and urged legislative resolution at the national level.
Speaking on the occasion of the World Day Against the Death Penalty, celebrated on October 10 each year, Bouayach stated, “We should not miss the legislative opportunity to abolish the death penalty, as the reality has already effectively halted it. I renew my call for the government to vote in favor of the UN resolution next December.”
Addressing a gathering of human rights activists and diplomats at the headquarters of the council, Bouayach noted that the council’s position advocating for the abolition of the death penalty is based on two main points: first, the nature of the right itself, which is inherent and absolute, forming the foundation for all other rights; and second, the nature of the institution, which is committed to protecting this right.
