Morocco launches major rehabilitation program following devastating floods
Thursday 26 September 2024 - 18:30

The government has announced a comprehensive rehabilitation program aimed at rebuilding communities devastated by recent torrential rains and flooding in the southeastern regions of the country.

The initiative, launched in direct response to royal directives, is set to allocate approximately MAD 2.5 billion to repair the damages caused by the natural disaster.

The floods, which occurred in provinces including Errachidia, Midelt, Tinghir, Zagora, Figuig, Jerada, Taroudant, Tata, Tiznit, Guelmim, and Ouarzazate, resulted in significant loss of life and property.

The government has mobilized all available resources to provide immediate assistance to affected residents and to ensure the swift implementation of the recovery program.

The Moroccan government’s rehabilitation program will focus on rebuilding homes and buildings damaged by the floods.

The program will also include repairing damaged roads, communication networks, and water and sanitation systems, and supporting agricultural activities in affected areas.

The support of agricultural activities will include the rehabilitation of small and medium-sized irrigation systems and providing assistance to livestock farmers who lost their animals.

The government’s press release emphasized the commitment of the Moroccan authorities to stand with the affected populations and meet their needs.

An official from the Tata municipality said that the losses are significant, with some villages still unreachable by assessment teams.

The official added that the responsibility for compensation lies solely with the government, not local authorities, and that current procedures involve assessing losses and submitting reports to the ministry of interior.

Local authorities continue to assess damages and account for those impacted.

Mustapha Baitas, the government spokesperson, had previously addressed the situation during a press conference following a government council meeting saying that “various government departments and local authorities are mobilizing financial and human resources to respond effectively from the outset.”

Officials indicate that financial compensation could be facilitated through the Disaster Insurance Fund.
